There is nothing sweeter in life than experiencing my children plan and keep a birthday surprise from me. The love they show in their effort with keeping a secret, as a smirk crosses their face and they fold their arms while saying, “I’m not telling you what we’re doing”, just melts my heart.

I felt my birthday would be quite depressing this year, however, it’s been anything but that. The festivities started last night when Jase took Kai and Zoe to the store and the kids could hardly contain their excitement when I came home from running my own errands. They were so giddy with their secret that all they could do was run up to me, hug me and say “I love you, Mommy.”

Early this morning, the kids were downstairs helping Jase prepare things. When they were all ready, the kids came upstairs and wanted to lead me to the surprise. Kai wanted me to close my eyes as he led me down the stairs while holding my hand but it wasn’t possible due to having the baby, Cali, in my arms at the same time (not to mention the intense fear of walking down stairs without sight) but it was a cute gesture, nonetheless. Once downstairs, a wonderful breakfast with presents and flowers awaited me on the table.

It’s in these moments when being a mom is easy and the most amazing “job” I could ever hope for and visions of “happily ever after” and “Prince Charming” are a reality. These times are what sustain me through the rough.

I love my family.
